Fire Prevention Bureau - Frequently Asked Questions
How are inspections conducted?
Most commercial occupancies (stores and offices) are inspected annually by an on-duty fire crew. These inspections focus on obvious housekeeping violations, which, in most cases, can be easily corrected. A violation notice is given to the manager or occupants of the business at the time of the initial inspection. One month after the initial inspection, a re-inspection is performed to determine the status of the violations. If all violations are not brought into compliance, then a second re-inspection is conducted, two weeks after the first. If, at that point,
any violations remain, then the occupancy is referred to an inspector from the Fire Prevention Bureau. The inspector will then visit the business, in order to determine what steps will need to be taken to eliminate the hazard.
Certain commercial occupancies (restaurants, gas stations, etc) and all industrial occupancies are inspected by an Inspector from the Fire Prevention Bureau.
It is helpful if a representative of the business accompany the inspector as the inspection progresses.
The inspector will explain the violations as they are found, and provide information as to how they can be best corrected. A violation notice is issued to the business owner or operator following the inspection (usually within one week). A re-inspection will then be scheduled, 30 days after the violation notice is issued. It is in your best interest to correct any
violations found during the inspection, as soon as possible. This is for the safety of you and your employees. A fire can severely disrupt the operation of your business, or even cause the total loss of your livelihood.
Why fire alarms are directly connected to the fire department?
When fire strikes, minutes count. On average, a fire doubles in size every 2 minutes.
Whenever a fire alarm is connected to an outside service, there is an inherent delay in the alarm being transmitted to the fire department.
With a direct connected system, the person that dispatches the fire apparatus also monitors the fire alarms.
This system minimizes the delay in getting the apparatus to the scene. The Addison Fire Protection District is dispatched by DuComm Public Safety Communications. If any work is done on your alarm system, please call Nor-Comm and let them know the system is being worked on.
This helps minimize false activations and allows us to be available for emergencies. The phone number for DuComm is 630-690-8245.
